Traditional tapas with a modern twist
Taberna Pedraza is a small and cute cafe in the Retiro neighborhood of Madrid that specializes in traditional Spanish favorites made with top-shelf ingredients and a smart, modern touch. Don’t let the word “modern” fool you…Taberna Pedraza serves of time-honored Spanish comfort food like croquetas, tortilla, ensalada rusa, grilled octopus, mussels, and chistorra, but whose flavor and presentation are miles away from what you’ll find in the endless greasy-spoon bars which dot the Spanish capital.
We ordered the ensalada rusa (a cold potato and vegetable salad made with mayonnaise), the ham croquettes, the morcilla sausage with caramelized apples, and the grilled octopus served with a smoky romesco sauce. The ensalada rusa was above average but not out of this world, but the grilled octopus with surprisingly tender and flavorful and went perfectly with the cool romesco sauce.
The restaurant also has a pretty good looking wine list though I went for after-work tapas and we went with beers instead. It is somewhat on the pricey side, but then again the products and cooking are top-notch so you get what you pay for in the end. I probably wouldn’t make a trip all the way from the downtown area just to eat there, but if you’re hungry after a walk around [poi=2302]Retiro Park[/poi] or [poi=422221]Barrio de Salamanca[/poi], it’s a sure bet. Enjoy!
